Chimney-sweeps and builders of tiled stoves as advisers

If you plan to build a new house or to renovate your old one, and you want to install a fireplace for solid fuels, then the best advisers are chimney-sweeps, fuel-dealers, specialized craftsmen and builders of tiled stoves. The sweep responsible for your area you can find in the Yellow Pages or at the guildn.

Chimney – Yes or No ?

This question is often asked when a new house is built. A considerable number of building owners has afterwards regretted not to have included a chimney.
As the costs of a chimney come to only 1% of the shell-sum, a decision shouldn’t be difficult. To include a chimney adds to your independence concerning the choice of heating system – and later on you have the chance to install a secondary heating system.

Emissions

All fossil fuels (coal, wood, oil, gas) cause emissions when burned. In our days it has become more important than ever to use every possibility to keep emissions low.
Apart from advice by chimney sweeps, fuel-dealers and others, the use of modern heating systems, suitable fuels and correct operation of the system is momentous.

Modern fireplaces for solid fuels

To have installed modern fireplaces for solid fuels means to follow the trend. Decisive factors for buying one are the resulting atmosphere, with the fire making the room comfortable and warm. Every year the number of tiled stoves / fireplaces and open fireplaces in Germany is increasing by about 250 000. These systems are predominantly used as reserve heating.
The demands on fireplaces in houses are no longer restricted to aesthetics and warmth – to an increasing degree factors such as economy and the rate of emission have come to the fore.
In contrast to old systems considerable improvements concerning the reduction of emissions have been made.

Heating correctly with wood

Active preservation is not only a matter of using fuels which are ecologically harmless or a matter of using a modern heating system. Three factors have to come together: The right fuel, the right fireplace, the right handling.

One of the most important rules is therefore: Follow the operating instructions of the heating system. Fuels such as plastic, cardboard, treated wood and refuse are not to be burnt. If you heed the following rules you’ll prevent causing unnecessary emissions:

Lighting the fire

Light the fire by putting thin pieces of wood and a few briquettes / small logs on the grate.
Set the air-control for lighting, light the fire and close the fire door. When the fuel is burning steadily, the air-control can be adjusted for the desired temperature.

Constant heating

If the fire is still glowing just fan the embers and put on some lignite. Set the air-control for lighting until the wood has caught fire. Please take care that there is enough air for the wood to burn.

Embers

For the night put on 2-4 briquettes and wait until they burn. Then close the air-control. In the morning it is warm again in no time.

Conclusion

To conserve energy and to preserve the environment, only as much fuel should be used as is actually required at that moment.

The fireplace and the connection-piece to the chimney should be maintained regularly.
Power-reduction and unnecessary emissions will ensure from insufficient maintenance.

Any questions...?

Ask the chimney-sweep, chimney-builder, fuel-dealer or specialised craftsman.
